Public competition for the design of the requalification project for a Basic and High School at Vendas Novas, promoted by the Municipality of Vendas Novas.
The project aimed to remodel and unify the existing architectural and cultural heritage of the educational complex, composed of the two distinct schools and all the various support facilities and equipment on the site, creating new meeting and learning spaces, allowing flexibility in the use of spaces (especially in the two new proposed spaces – the library and the auditorium – which should also serve the community) and also creating a new architectural image (through the choice of materials and textures that would identify the entire educational complex).
The landscape architecture proposal was strongly inspired by the structure of the agricultural colonnades of Vendas Novas, where a linear land division dictated a new model of territorial organization that remains to this day. In functional terms, the proposal consists of a central courtyard, which will be the dominant element of the composition and distributor of student circulation flows within the school complex. Clad in stabilized gravel, the central courtyard sought to recreate the old courtyards of public schools, concentrating a set of leisure and informal recreation activities, but also spaces for living and studying.
In the selection process, the jury considered that “…the solution presents a remarkable articulation between the various school buildings and a remarkable balance between the built environment and the exterior spaces, promoting a clear hierarchy between them through the distinction of covered, semi-covered and open spaces, which allow for a diverse and flexible appropriation of the entire site.“, leading to the awarding of an Honorable Mention.
