Design competition for the Campo de Ourique Sports Pavilion project promoted by Lisboa Ocidental, SRU – Sociedade de Reabilitação Urbana, EM, S.A.
The submitted proposal focused on integrating a new sports facility into the local context. The creative process involved reinterpreting the elements, structures, and processes of the Alcântara Valley landscape. The proposal was guided by two structural principles aligned with the objectives of the New European Bauhaus initiative: a) creating an integrated network of outdoor spaces that allowed not only for access and thoroughfare but also for broad, inclusive use of the site; and b) creating a distinctive architectural object on the hillside capable of fostering social integration for the former Casal Ventoso area.
The proposal envisioned the New Pavilion as a structure that was both integrated and appealing to residents and visitors alike. It utilized materiality – specifically modular, prefabricated glued-laminated timber elements – to symbolize a new phase of urban expansion, adopting a contemporary vision that enhanced the surroundings and contributed to the site’s architectural and urban quality.
To ensure the building complex integrated harmoniously with the landscape, the design incorporated areas of trees and shrubs surrounding the structure, with the roof itself featuring a planted finish. Efforts were also made to integrate the sports pavilion’s built structure by creating a pedestrian mobility axis connecting Campo de Ourique and the Alcântara Valley; this path included new resting points and leveraged unique scenic views.
