Winner of the public tender for services to adapt the “Type A Modular Daycare” designs for the Quinta dos Ourives Daycare Center.
With a capacity for 84 children, the Quinta dos Ourives Daycare is part of the Lisbon City Council’s bid for the UNICEF-created “Child-Friendly Cities” program. This program is based on the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, encouraging cities to rethink urban planning and the quality of life they offer their youngest citizens.
Lisbon City Council commissioned Lisboa Ocidental SRU to oversee the design and construction of these facilities in the city’s most underserved areas. The proposal features a compact, rectangular building with an integrated courtyard that connects the circulation areas to the outdoor play space. While the provided standard architectural design was largely retained, specific adaptations were made—notably, the expansion of the outdoor play area’s roof canopy to minimize wind-driven rainwater ingress.
The landscape architecture design sought, in the initial phase, to diversify outdoor spaces by integrating various functions and creating an internal circulation network structured around the daycare’s access points to the outdoors and the proposed outdoor amenities.
